M&Y gets cooking on ambitious kitchen programme

Fitting a kitchen is a big job... installing 838 new kitchens calls for a small army of skilled trades people and a huge amount of planning.

So far M&Y Maintenance and Construction has completed 12 new kitchen makeovers as part of an ambitious programme of works which is scheduled to last almost a year.

Hundreds of Regenda Homes’ residents across the North West will see their old kitchens replaced with stylish new units and contemporary work surfaces. The kitchens will be finished off with new flooring, fresh tiling and also be re-plastered and re-decorated.

Peter Martlew, planned maintenance contracts manager, said: “It is such a big job that we have had to split it into two separate streams of work. Labourers start by taking out the old kitchens, then the plasterers, fitters, electricians, tillers, heating engineers and finishers get to work, aiming to complete around 20 new kitchens every week,” said Peter.

The planned works began on 13 April and are due to be finished by 31 March, 2016.

“So far the feedback we’ve had from residents who’ve had their new kitchens fitted has been brilliant. Every day is a learning curve and every day we improve our performance.  Having an eye for detail and always making sure the customer is happy with their new kitchen is what really matters,” added Peter.

Kiera Vogel, director of planned maintenance, says the move into kitchen installation in symbolic, heralding M&Y’s arrival in the world of major refurbishment work.

“After fitting new windows, central heating and bathrooms, kitchens represent the last phase and show that we are now fully skilled, equipped and experienced to carry out major refurbishment works. We’re now working in 70 properties at any one time and, although the work can be disruptive to our residents, customer satisfaction scoring is really high,” said Kiera.

You only have to look at the finished job to see the quality of the products and the level of professionalism.

“We’re not just making sure the kitchens get fitted, we’re looking at increasing the product and delivering an improved offer. We are plastering and decorating to ensure the end result is a finished product that we can be proud of and our residents are delighted with,” added Kiera.

The move into planned maintenance has already created 62 new roles, half of whom are now directly employed in kitchen installation.

“As a business everyone involved has worked very hard to make this happen. Whether you work in the neighbourhood teams or asset management, if you’ve contributed in any way your input has been vital and I’d just like to say a big thank you,” said Kiera.

So, 12 new kitchens already done, only 826 to go!
