Regenda apprentices prepare to set sail from their home city of Liverpool on a voyage of discovery

Two teenagers from an award-winning community apprenticeship project are preparing to spend a week crewing a magnificent tall ship.

Seventeen year-old Warren White and 18 year-old Daniel Loughran, who are part of Regenda Homes’ Community Wellbeing Apprenticeship scheme, will sail from their home port of Liverpool to Milford Haven in the annual Apprentice Ship Cup.

Both admit to being excited and also a little nervous.

“I’m really looking forward to climbing the masts but I just hope I don’t get seasick,” said Warren. “I’ve never done anything like this before, the nearest thing was being in a rubber dingy!”

The two apprentices, who are supported by the Regenda Homes housing association, are based at the Breckfield and North Everton Community Centre where they combine college study with work placements and community work.

On Saturday 4 June they will step aboard the elegant Class A tall ship Pelican of London to take part in the annual Apprentice Ship Cup. They will compete alongside 120 apprentices on two tall ships. It’s the third successive year Regenda Homes’ apprentices have taken part in the voyage.

Project leader, Kevin Short, values what the adventure has to offer young people: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity they wouldn’t normally get. Without a shadow of a doubt this experience will change them. We know from previous voyages that the apprentices come back into the workplace feeling more energised and focussed,” said Kevin.

Warren and Daniel will step aboard during next weekend’s colourful International Mersey River Festival and set sail in the early hours of Monday 6 June.
