Fuel grants

With the cost of energy bills rising, support is available. We've compiled a list of grants that could help. If you're ever concerned about money, our dedicated Financial Inclusion Team is on hand to help. They can provide support on a wide range of financial issues, including:

  • Benefits advice and help to apply for these (online, form filling, telephone applications etc)
  • Benefit appeals and challenging incorrect decisions (including sanctions)
  • Specialist support with Universal Credit (including making a claim, changes in circumstances, and checking that awards have been worked out correctly)
  • Grants to help with urgent needs such as rent arrears, or essential household items
  • Support with utility debts (gas, electric and water)
  • Budgeting advice
  • Advice on opening a bank account
  • Signposting to the appropriate advice provider for free, confidential debt advice

Fuel grants

Government's Warm Home Discount Scheme

The government’s warm home discount scheme is a one-off payment of £140 to the electricity bills of eligible customers. Payment of a Warm Home Discount does not affect entitlement to a Winter Fuel Payment or Cold Weather Payment. Cold weather payment

The cold weather payment is additional money for people receiving certain benefits, including pension credit, Universal Credit and Income Support. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. You’ll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March. To find out more, visit www.gov.uk/cold-weather-payment

Household Support Fund

The government has announced a £500m fund to help families this winter. This will be given to local authorities, who will distribute to families to help with essential household bills and living costs. To find out more, visit your local council’s website.

Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born on or before 26 September 1955, you could get between £100 and £300 to help with your heating bills this winter. The deadline to make a claim for winter 2021 to 2022 is 31 March 2022. To find out more, visit www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment
