Protecting your home in cold weather

If there's no water coming out of your taps, you can check that the water hasn't been turned off in your local area by checking on your suppliers website. If there are no works going on in your area, your pipes could be frozen.

If you are unsure about what to do you can always call us on 0344 736 0066

We have also created some tips on preventing pipes from freezing and what to do if this does happen.

Protecting pipes

Pipes will have a small amount of water in them, even when turned off. This water can freeze when temperatures drop. If pipes freeze, it can leave you without running water and when they thaw, they can burst, flooding your home.

To stop pipes from freezing, you can:

  • Run your taps – it’s harder for water to freeze if it’s running, so run taps regularly if you can.

If your pipes freeze:

  • Turn on taps – this will ease pressure on the system and will show you where the frozen pipes are
  • Turn up the heating – increasing the temperature in your home could help to thaw frozen pipes
  • If you can identify where the frozen pipe is, you’ll need to warm the pipe slowly. Wrap a warm cloth around the frozen section of the pipe or use a hair dryer on a low setting if you can. NEVER use a flame to thaw pipes – pipes may melt or explode
  • If multiple pipes are frozen or if you’re unsure, please call us straight away on 0344 736 0066
