Non-dependant deductions

What are non-dependant deductions?

A non-dependant deduction is money taken off your Universal Credit Housing Costs, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support. This happens if you live with someone who is not your partner, a lodger or a joint tenant.

A non-dependant could be a friend, parent, adult child or another relative aged 18 or over. The deduction still applies even if they do not give you any money.

You can check if a non-dependent deduction will affect your benefit using the Turn2Us Benefit Calculator (this link will open in a new tab and take you away from our site).  Or you can call our Income Team on 0344 736 0066 for support.
