Earth moves for Regenda residents as forgotten allotments reappear

An overgrown allotment which lay neglected for years has been rescued for the local community.

When residents appealed for help to tidy up the patch of land at Dowhills Park in Blundellsands, near Crosby on Merseyside, Regenda Homes offered to help.

Young people who are taking part in the housing association’s award winning Community Wellbeing Apprentice project and landscapers from its maintenance and construction company, M&Y, set to work clearing the small jungle of weeds and rubbish.

Neighbourhood officer, Jon Daley, says the hard work was worth it.

“When I’d been on walkabouts, talking to residents, the issue of the state of the old allotments kept cropping up. It was an eyesore for local people and also the commuters travelling on the railway line which runs right next to it,” said Jon.

The allotments were in use until about six years ago when interest faded.  Weeds soon took hold and the land quickly became neglected.

Edward Smith, a resident of Dowhills Park, is among those delighted to see the transformation.

“We’d all been saying for a long time what a shame it was that the land wasn’t being used anymore. It looks so much better now and hopefully people will show interest once again and take some real pride in it,” he said.

Raised beds will be created and fruit trees planted to encourage residents to use the allotment to grow and share their own vegetables and flowers... or quietly enjoy doing nothing.
