Community apprentices set sail on voyage of self discovery

Good luck to Regenda Homes' Community Wellbeing Apprentices who are taking part in an exciting tall ships race.

The teenagers are sailing from Glasgow via the Western Isles back to their home city of Liverpool as part of the annual Apprentice Ship Cup.

They are on board the magnificent Class A tall ship Pelican of London which is due in Liverpool on 27 June after a six day voyage.

The apprentices, who are supported by the Regenda Homes housing association, are involved in a pioneering project which allows them to combine college study with work placements and valuable community work.

Regenda’s project manager, Kev Short, said:”The sea voyage is an extraordinary opportunity for these young people to experience something truly life-changing.  On the ship they will work as a team, learn new skills and perhaps discover new things about themselves. The voyage will certainly broaden their horizons in more ways than one.”

Among those taking part is 17 year-old Simona Malarova from West Derby who admitted to being nervous before she set sail.

“I’ve never been sailing before never mind on a tall ship! I’m nervous and excited at the same time and so looking forward to sailing back into Liverpool,” said Simona.

The other Regenda apprentices on the voyage are 17 year-old Thomas Moogan from Croxteth, 17 year-old Caitlyn Davies from Anfield and their apprentice coach 21 year-old Anthony Denneny who is also from Anfield. Anthony took part in the same tall ships event last year.

The Apprentice Ship Cup is hosted by the charity MAST, the Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust.
