More households expected to benefit from reduced water bills - WaterSure Reform

The UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has announced that more people can pay lower water bills after making changes to the WaterSure scheme.

What is WaterSure?

WaterSure is a scheme that helps people on low incomes pay their water bills. There are currently around 300,000 households that benefit from the scheme, so they can pay less for their water.

The scheme helps people who need to use more water than usual, either because of a medical condition or because they have three or more children living at home.

What do the WaterSure changes include?

The changes mean more people might be able to get help from WaterSure, including:

  • People receiving disability benefits are eligible if their household income is below £25,745 per year

  • Bills will now be capped at the lowest average reading

  • People living alone will have their bills capped at the average bill for a one-person household

  • People will no longer need to pay for a doctor’s note to apply, making it quicker, cheaper, and easier to get help

These changes will come into force in early 2027. If you already receive support through WaterSure, this will continue under the current rules until then.

Think you might qualify?

If you think you qualify for WaterSure, and have a water meter in your home, you can contact your water company to enquire.
