Personal Independence Payment

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Personal Independence Payment is a benefit to help with extra costs if you have care or mobility needs. It has replaced Disability Living Allowance for people of working age.

PIP is tax-free and you can get it whether you are working or not.

If you get PIP, you may also:

  • qualify for extra support on other benefits, like Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Housing Benefit and Pension Credit

  • be exempt from some deductions, such as non-dependant deductions

  • be allowed an extra bedroom if you need an overnight carer

  • qualify for extra support on other benefits, like Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Jobseeker’s Allowance, Housing Benefit and Pension Credit.

Carer’s Allowance

You may get Carer’s Allowance if:

  • you are aged 16 or over

  • you are not in full-time education

  • you care for someone for at least 35 hours a week.

The person you care for must get one of the following:

  • Attendance Allowance

  • Constant Attendance Allowance

  • Disability Living Allowance (middle or higher care rate)

  • Personal Independence Payment (daily living part)

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment.
