Anchors aweigh – Liverpool apprentices get ready to sail the Irish sea

In what is bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘sailing through work’, Shaun McLean, Daniel Loughran, Simona Malarova, Emma Ashcroft and Neil Hynes are currently taking part in the annual Apprentice Ship Cup, which started on Monday 19 June.

Sailing from Belfast to Liverpool, the apprentices, who all work for Regenda Homes and M&Y Maintenance and Construction, will help sail the ship, climb the masts, navigate, clean the decks and prepare meals.

The group are competing alongside 150 apprentices, with the Regenda five crewing the elegant, Earl of Pembroke.

Kevin Short, Project Leader at the Regenda Group, said: “This a fantastic opportunity for our young apprentices and an experience which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

“We know from previous years that many apprentices come back into the workplace with a new outlook and feel more energised and focussed.”

Daniel Loughran, apprentice with Regenda Homes, said: “I took part in the event last year and I am over the moon to be going back out to sea.

“I’ll try and pass some tips to my fellow crew members and help us win the race!”

The two crews are expected to return to Liverpool on Thursday 22 June, where they will be welcomed home by colleagues from the Regenda Group
