Beat the heat – tips to stay cool and save money this summer

We’re looking forward to warmer, brighter days over the summer – and there are ways you can use the change in season to your advantage and save money on your energy bills. Here are some of our t op tips, hints and tricks:
Using curtains wisely
Lighting makes up around 11% of the average electricity bill. You can make the most ou t of lighter days by o pening curtains to brighten your living space . C losing curtains and blinds can keep your rooms cool to keep out direct sunlight.
Keeping cool
Opening windows and internal doors during summer months means natural ventilation can flow through your home.
When there is little to no breeze, fans are also a cost-effective way to get cool air flowing around your home. They don’t use much energy, a small USB fan on your desk can be as cheap as £0.01 per day!
Making the most of your outdoor space
Whether it’s a balcony, back yard or garden, using your outdoor space to hang your laundry leaves it smelling fresh without the need for the tumble dryer. Tumble dryers are very energy hungry, adding up to £50 a year to your bills.
Eat for the season
Using your oven in summer months can make your kitchen unpleasantly warm.
Lots of British produce is at its best during the summer months, from beetroot to broccoli to peas and potatoes, why not try a seasonal sandwich or salad?
