We are delighted to have been nominated for a national award in recognition of their involvement in an ambitious community arts project and their partnership work in Oldham.

Limehurst Arts Society has been recognised in the inaugural Heart for the Arts Awards that highlight the importance of the arts to the wellbeing of local communities and the value that this investment brings.

The project is a partnership between Regenda Homes, Oldham Council’s Arts Development team and Arts Council England, and has received a nomination in the Best Local Authority Arts Initiative category.

Limehurst Arts Society was formed in April 2016 with the aim of integrating art into the fabric of the community through a sustained programme of grass roots activities over two years.

Since the project began, over 1,000 residents have engaged with the initiative and developed confidence and skills through a range of activities. This includes a craft enterprise group for local artists and the Limehurst Life quarterly arts newspaper, which is delivered to all houses on the Limehurst estate.

An additional 19,000 people have taken part in events, including regular family film showings and a popular ‘Limehurst By The Sea’ summer arts festival.

The judging panel described Limehurst Arts Society as “a good example of public and private involvement with genuine efforts at community integration.”

Chris Standish, Regeneration and Place Manager for Regenda, said: “The project is a key strand in Regenda’s commitment to transform the lives of local residents as part of our ten year Limehurst Vision. It is the first time we have commissioned socially-engaged arts work on this scale, and we are proud to have received this respected recognition on a national scale.”

Limehurst Arts Society is up against projects in Blackpool, London, Nottingham and Southampton for the award. The winners will be announced next week.
