October is Domestic Abuse Awareness month.

It’s important to talk about feeling safe at home. Sometimes, people live with someone who makes them feel scared, sad or controlled. This is called domestic abuse and it can happen to anyone.

What does domestic abuse look like?

Domestic abuse isn’t just hitting or hurting, it can be:

  • Saying mean or scary things
  • Telling you who you can see or what you can do
  • Making you feel alone, scared, or not good enough
  • Taking your money or stopping you from working
  • Hurting you physically like hitting, pushing or grabbing.

If you have ever asked yourself, “is this OK?”, it might not be.

Why are we talking about this?

We are supporting the #IsThisOk campaign created by Greater Manchester Combined Authority based on meetings with people who lived through domestic abuse.

They want others to know:

  • Abuse can look different for everyone
  • Help is out there, report domestic abuse
  • There is lots of support available for people who are suffering domestic abuse.
