Retired butcher reveals the secret to 105 years of happy living

There wasn’t much space on Tom Peers' birthday cake for more candles as he celebrated his 105th birthday on Monday.
Born in Birkenhead on 30 April 1913, Tom attended Brassey Street School before going on to serve in the Territorial Army anti-aircraft core.
In 1927, Tom trained as a butcher and it’s his love of fresh meat that he claims has helped him live such a long and fruitful life!
During the war Tom spent a number of years in Egypt and Syria before returning to Birkenhead where he continued working as a butcher for 50 years.
Tom married his wife Beryl in 1952 and had three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In 1989, Tom moved into Maritime Grange, a sheltered housing scheme owned and managed by Regenda Homes, and has lived there ever since. He is the oldest and longest serving resident at the scheme.
